Once the sun goes down, Bandung's air turns cool, especially up north in areas such as Ciumbuleuit and Dago. That is when late-night food in Bandung really comes into its own: martabak fresh from the pan, steaming bowls of seblak, satay grilled over charcoal, or a glass of bandrek to warm you up from the inside.

This guide covers what people tend to eat after dark, the areas that are usually lively, and some timing and safety tips so your evening stays relaxed. We have not named specific stalls, because street vendors' locations and hours can change, so always check the latest information before you set off.

What to Eat: Late-Night Food in Bandung

Sweet and Savoury Martabak

Martabak is one of Bandung's most familiar evening treats. Martabak manis is a thick, fluffy pancake baked in a heavy pan and filled with chocolate, cheese, peanuts or condensed milk. Outside West Java it is often simply called martabak Bandung. Martabak telur is the savoury version: a thin fried pastry packed with egg, minced meat and spring onion. Many sellers now offer modern toppings as well, so it is worth asking what they have.

Seblak, Satay and Fried Rice

Spicy, soupy seblak feels just right on a chilly night. Pick your own toppings and choose a heat level you can handle. You will find more on seblak and its friends in our guide to Bandung street snacks.

Satay is easy to find, from chicken satay with peanut sauce to goat satay. West Java's own sate maranggi, from Purwakarta, uses meat marinated before grilling and is usually eaten with a tomato and chilli sambal. Then there is the nasi goreng (fried rice) cart that sets up after dusk, a familiar sight on many corners of the city.

Warm Drinks: Bandrek and Bajigur

Bandrek is a ginger drink sweetened with palm sugar and spiced with lemongrass and cinnamon, sometimes with milk added. Bajigur is gentler, made with coconut milk, palm sugar and ginger, sometimes with a little coffee, for a sweet and slightly savoury taste. Both are traditionally enjoyed with boiled snacks such as peanuts, sweet potato, banana or corn.

Other cool-weather favourites include grilled corn (jagung bakar), toasted bread with sweet fillings (roti bakar) and mie kocok, a Bandung noodle soup in beef broth with kikil, the soft, gelatinous meat from a cow's foot.

Areas That Are Usually Lively at Night

The city centre, including the streets around Jalan Braga and Alun-alun Bandung, usually stays busy well into the evening with plenty of places to eat. Dago is popular too, both along its main road and higher up the hill. For views of the city lights, many people head up to Punclut, short for Puncak Ciumbuleuit Utara, or on towards Lembang.

The roads up the hill wind and can be quite dark in places, so drive carefully, particularly after rain. Vendors' hours can also vary from day to day, so it is worth checking the latest details before you go.

Timing and Safety Tips

  • Head out earlier at weekends. Popular areas get crowded and queues at well-loved stalls can be long.
  • Bring a jacket or cardigan. North Bandung can feel properly chilly at night, especially after rain.
  • Choose busy stalls that cook to order, and eat while the food is hot.
  • Carry small notes, even though many sellers now accept QRIS or e-wallets.
  • Use a ride-hailing app or a licensed taxi if you are out late, and keep valuables secure.
  • If you are driving, use a proper parking spot and avoid quiet roads you do not know.

Want to try several dishes in one night? Share portions. You will have room to try more and can fit in a second or third stop.

Dinner Without Going Far

You do not always need to head out for a relaxed evening meal. Artisan Coffee, on the 2nd floor of Aksara Hotel, is open from 08.00 to 22.00 Sunday to Thursday and until 23.00 on Friday and Saturday. The menu covers coffee and non-coffee drinks, light bites, pastries and main courses, all of them halal.

Nasi Goreng Merah is one of the favourites, and it tastes even better on the rooftop terrace in the cool Ciumbuleuit night air. To get to know the café better, read about coffee at Artisan Coffee.

Back to a Comfortable Room in North Bandung

After a night of eating, getting back to Aksara Hotel is easy. The front desk is open 24 hours, valet parking is available, and the outdoor pool is open 24 hours too if you fancy a quick swim before bed. In your room, an electric kettle with tea and coffee is ready for one last warm drink.

If you just want snacks or drinks to take back to your room, the Yogya Ciumbuleuit supermarket is about 550 m from the hotel. Check its opening hours first, then keep your drinks cold in the room's mini fridge.

Browse our rooms and book directly on the website. If a late swim sounds tempting, read more about our hotel with a swimming pool in north Bandung.
