Much of Bandung's appeal lies in the landscape around it. Nature in north Bandung means shady forest trails, a cliff with views across a wooded valley and hills with cool, fresh air, all within reach of the city. You can enjoy it in half a day without having to stay up in the mountains.

This guide covers five well-known destinations: Taman Hutan Raya Ir. H. Djuanda, Tebing Keraton, Dago, Punclut and Lembang. We keep the descriptions general, because opening times, tickets and access can change, so always check the latest information before you go.

Taman Hutan Raya Ir. H. Djuanda

Tahura, as locals call it, is a large forest park in upper Dago. Its walking paths are shaded by tall trees and follow a river, with several good spots to stop and rest. Inside you will also find Gua Belanda and Gua Jepang, caves dating from the Dutch colonial era and the Japanese occupation.

Go in the morning, when the air is fresh and the trails are quieter. Bring a small torch, or use your phone light, if you plan to go into the caves, and wear shoes with good grip because paths can be slippery after rain.

Tahura suits anyone who wants a decent walk without climbing a mountain. You set the distance yourself: stroll for a while and turn back, or carry on further if you still have the legs for it.

Tebing Keraton

Tebing Keraton is a cliff in the hills of north Bandung with a wide view over a forested valley. It is famous as a sunrise spot, when morning mist often hangs between the trees.

The road up is steep and fairly narrow, so make sure your vehicle and driver are comfortable with hills. If you are going for sunrise, leave while it is still dark and bring a jacket, as early mornings up there feel cold. Take care near the edge too: stay on the paths and within the safe areas.

Missed the sunrise? A clear mid-morning can be lovely as well. The valley view is just as wide, even if the mist has usually thinned by then.

Dago and Punclut

Dago is a long stretch that runs from the city centre up into the hills to the north. The higher you go, the greener it gets and the more the city opens up below you. It is also the gateway to Tahura and Tebing Keraton, so the three combine easily in one morning.

Punclut sits in the hills above Ciumbuleuit, which puts it fairly close to Aksara Hotel. Many people come in the morning for a stroll or a jog with views over the city. Along the road you will find simple eateries serving Sundanese food such as nasi timbel, ideal after a walk.

Lembang and Tangkuban Parahu

Lembang is a small highland town north of Bandung, with cooler air, farms and plenty of family attractions. It is also known for its fresh milk, which is easy to find along the main road. Further on lies Gunung Tangkuban Parahu, a volcano whose crater can be visited when conditions are safe.

Lembang is very popular at weekends and during holidays, so the road there can be congested. If you can, go on a weekday or set off very early. For Tangkuban Parahu, check its current status and opening times before you travel.

Tips for Exploring Nature in North Bandung

For most of these places, morning is the ideal time: cool air, soft light and fewer visitors. The middle of the day can be hot, and afternoons in the rainy season often bring showers. One or two places in half a day is plenty, and a few simple things will make the outing easier.

  • A light jacket or jumper, especially for very early starts and higher spots.
  • Shoes with a non-slip sole.
  • A refillable water bottle. Rooms at Aksara Hotel have free drinking water refills.
  • A compact umbrella or rain poncho.
  • Some cash for tickets, parking or small food stalls.
  • A small bag for rubbish, so you leave nothing behind.

Planning Your Route from Ciumbuleuit

Because Ciumbuleuit is already in north Bandung, several of these places can be reached without crossing the city centre. Tahura and Tebing Keraton are both reached through the Dago area, while Punclut sits in the hills just above Ciumbuleuit. Give Lembang its own outing, as it is further away and the road is often busy.

Opening times, ticket prices and trail conditions can change at short notice, especially after heavy rain. Check the latest official information before you set off.

If it rains all day, try our ideas for indoor things to do in Bandung instead. The city is still good fun under a roof.

Back to Ciumbuleuit After a Day Outdoors

After a morning in the forest or up on the cliffs, it is good to come back somewhere quiet. At Aksara Hotel you can unwind in the 24-hour pool, then enjoy a coffee on the Artisan rooftop with its view of the Ciumbuleuit trees. Every room has a hot shower, which is very welcome after a day in the cool air.
